Do you want to get some snow under your feet? Many Californians escape to Lake Tahoe for a winter vacation getaway, but they may not be prepared for the wintry conditions. With an average annual snowfall of more than 100 inches, you need to plan ahead. Here are six snowy weather driving and car care tips to help you on your travels:

1. Clean before you go

Wash and wax your vehicle before your trip to help to protect your paint. When clearing snow and ice from your windows, mirrors, and windshield, take care to avoid scratching or chipping paint surfaces with the scraper.

2. Prepare for emergencies

You should always plan ahead in the event of an emergency on the road. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle complete with jumper cables, tire pressure gauge and a portable pump, and a cell phone charger. Dead batteries commonly occur in cold weather.

3. Do a check-up

Give your vehicle a check-up to avoid breakdowns. Check the batteries, cables and belts. Fill any fluids that are low and get your oil changed if it needs it. Replace your windshield wipers to keep a safe view of the road. Most importantly, check your tire pressure and quality. Tire pressure decreases in colder weather, and a worn tire could blow, causing an accident.

4. Know safe winter driving basics

Avoid sudden stops, leave room between your vehicle and the next, and as you brake to slow your vehicle. On icy roads, if you brake too hard you will lose control of your vehicle which can cause an accident. If your car does start to slide, turn into the direction of the slide slightly and use the brake gently.

5. Keep it covered

When you reach your snowy destination, use a garage or carport to protect your vehicle from the snow and cold temperatures. The warmer and more protected you can keep your vehicle, the better chances you have protecting it from the harsh weather.

6. Clean when you get home

Not only does snow leave dirt and sediment on your car, but road salt can also adhere to your vehicle’s metal and cause corrosion. Avoid wiping the salt off of your vehicle as you can scratch the surface, but do wash your car upon your return to ensure you remove all of the salt remnants and dirt from the trip.
