You spend a lot of money maintaining your vehicle. You wash it, keep it clean, change the oil, and do everything you can to keep it purring like a kitten. Inevitably, though, at some point, something’s going to happen. A little fender-bender on the highway. A stray pebble kicked up from a tire. Rogue shopping cart in the parking lot. No matter how careful you are, it seems like the world is going to get to your car. That’s why it’s important to have a trusted body shop that you’re ready to take your ride to should the need arise. But finding a tried-and-true place to go is not easy. There are a lot of places out there that you’d rather avoid, if given the chance. So, how do you know? Finding the perfect place for you and your car can be difficult, but we have a few tips that should come in handy when the time comes.
Ask Around
This is probably the most important piece of advice we can give: ask other people. Chances are, you have a friend or two who are just as into their cars as you are. Where do they take them? If not, the Internet is full of forums for people to get together and talk about their cars. (I mean, you’re already reading this online, right?) So, ask them. Credentials, good prices–all that stuff is important. Nothing beats the enthusiastic endorsement of someone you know cares as much as you do.
Look for Their Certifications
While it is technically not necessary for a body shop to have much in the way of certification, why would you trust your car to anyone who doesn’t? When visiting the shop, ask what certifications they have received. While most manufacturers have their own certification areas that workers can get trained in, there are also different state and national certifications that a shop can earn, such as certification by the Independent Auto Body Association and the Society of Collision Repair Specialists.
Ask Questions
These people are working on YOUR car, so it is important that you feel comfortable leaving it there. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
– Do they guarantee their work? If so, for how long? A shop that’s afraid to stand by its work shouldn’t be trusted.
– Does the shop have insurance in case of fire or theft? You don’t want to take a gamble and leave your car somewhere that won’t cover the cost of burglary, theft, or vandalism.
– Do they use new parts? Aftermarket? Where do they get them from?
Go With Your Gut
If, in the end, you simply don’t feel comfortable leaving your vehicle in a specific shop, then don’t. You are under no obligation to them at this point. There are a ton of body shops out there all trying to get your business, so if they haven’t done what they need to do to impress you, then take your car (and your money) someplace else.
